Sawney’s Top 10 (Actually 11) Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Films
I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to create this list. I adore so many sci-fi/fantasy films. (Some of which instead ended up on my favorite films of all time list.) Next to horror, these two genres have had the most impact on my storytelling. Like horror, you can make up your own rules, build worlds from scratch, and comment on weighty things ranging from politics to human nature without being overt about it.
In no particular order, here are my top ten sci-fi/fantasy flicks:
Time Bandits (dir. Terry Gilliam)
Robocop (dir. Paul Verhoeven)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both Don Siegel’s 1956 & Philip Kaufman’s 1978 versions)
The Dark Crystal (dir. Jim Henson & Frank Oz)
Planet of the Apes (1968) (dir. Franklin J. Schaffner)
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (dir. Mel Stuart)
A Monster Calls (dir. J.A. Bayona)
Flash Gordon (dir. Mike Hodges)
The Road Warrior (dir. George Miller)
Jason and the Argonauts (dir. Don Chaffey)
Honorable Mentions: Blade Runner, Pan’s Labyrinth, Escape from New York, The Company of Wolves, Gremlins, Them!, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
